The color-changing magic of Siamese and Balinese
The color-changing magic of Siamese and color-point cats—talk about a literal “cat-tastrophe” for the fashion-challenged! You see, these fancy felines start off as cute, little, mostly white furballs but evolve like Pokémon into their more colorful adult forms. This mesmerizing change is due to a genetic trait that makes the fur pigment, or melanin, sensitive to temperature. The cooler the area of their body, the darker the fur will be. When they’re born, kittens are in a warm environment (either the womb or a cozy nest), which means their entire body is warm, causing their fur to be lighter. As they grow and begin to roam, the temperature of their extremities like ears, nose, paws, and tail drops, leading to a darker fur color in those areas. It’s like nature’s mood ring but for cats!
But why do they continue to change as they age? Well, the plot thickens like a good mystery novel! Older cats may become darker overall due to a decrease in their body temperature as they age. Plus, changes in season and living conditions can also contribute to a gradual alteration in fur color. In winter, for example, the colder ambient temperature might result in a darker coat, only to lighten up again when summer rolls around. It’s like they’ve got a built-in wardrobe that adapts to the seasons. Truly, they’re the fashion-forward influencers of the animal kingdom.
